Pneumonia is a lung infection that is usually caused by a bacteria or a virus. Pneumonia severe enough to result in hospitalization often is caused by bacteria, and bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics. Different bacteria are treated with different antibiotics. The most appropriate antibiotic is determined by many factors. Higher numbers reflect better performance.
